Hodgdon Powder Company Acquires Ramshot Powder, Accurate Powder and Blackhorn 209 from Western Powders

Hodgdon Powder Company is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Ramshot and Accurate smokeless powder brands and the Blackhorn 209 muzzleloader brand from Western Powders. This acquisition is effective October 1, 2020, with the company set to immediately begin shipping these new products to wholesale and retail customers.

“This acquisition of the Ramshot and Accurate brands further solidifies our portfolio of smokeless brands and products for our handloading end users,” said Steve Kehrwald, president and CEO of Hodgdon Powder Company. “And the addition of Blackhorn 209 to our world-class muzzleloading brands like Pyrodex and Triple Seven uniquely positions us to serve the muzzleloading consumer. With these brands, we also add the capabilities of an additional ballistics lab to continue developing the data our customers demand from our Reloading Data Center tool and publications like our Annual and Basic Manuals.”

“Hodgdon has always been a strong competitor in the reloading powders industry,” said Doug Phair of Western Powders.  “The Hodgdon family has built a robust company.  Ramshot, Accurate and Blackhorn 209 will make excellent additions to the Hodgdon family of powders.”

“For years, our friends have referred to the Hodgdon family and company as ‘The Gunpowder People’ and this acquisition is another example of our dedication to the handloader and muzzleloader hunter,” said J.B. and Bob Hodgdon, co-owners and sons of the founder of the Hodgdon Powder Company. “We have experience in acquiring the IMR Powder brand in 2003, the Winchester Powder license in 2005 and the GOEX brand in 2009 and we plan to put this experience to use in expanding the reach and customer base of the Ramshot, Accurate and Blackhorn 209 brands.”

What Does This Mean?

I’m excited about the possibilities here! Hodgdon is a great company with great resources like their Reloading Data Center. With the combined resources of Accurate, Ramshot, Blackhorn 209, and all of the other Hodgdon brands (Hodgdon, IMR, Winchester powders, …) this could mean some very exciting things for load data, distribution, etc. I’ll keep you all posted as I find out more information!

Thanks,
Gavin

  1. Good news…??? Does this mean Ramshot won’t be available just like all of the other Hodgdon powders!!!!

  2. it can also be scary basically no competition and all of powder available for reloading controlled by one company

Look what happened to Remington after they were purchased by a investment company that drove them to financial insolvency. Or some deep pocket organization seeking to eliminate access to ammunition of the general public.

  3. I believe that Hogdon acquiring Western Powder and Accurate Powder is making Hogdon a monopoly with no way of getting a fair price.

  4. Do you have any content about the mec 600 Jr reloading press and how to change the set up from 20 gauge to 12 gauge?
    Thanks for the information.

  5. Hmmm… I have mixed feelings. I am a huge fan of hodgedon, winchester and imr products. I just hope this doesn’t mean ramshpt tac will go from being around $22/lb to $33.

  6. I remember when Hodgdon had the factory fire and all shotshell powders were non-existent. Yet they managed to keep the shelves stocked for all the new “AR” powders that were selling like hotcakes during an election year. Hodgdon is the fattest cat in the house and doesn’t care about its faithful consumers. Now they buy more companies and the competition is disappearing, which doesn’t bode well for us.
