About the SAC Modular Funnel Kit

Short Action Customs started out as a one-man operation and has grown to a company known and appreciated for producing quality products for the precision rifle community. I personally spoke with the Short Action Customs team about the funnel design process. They spent considerable time optimizing it for a better, more repeatable flow with anti-clog characteristics.

This is to prevent granules from getting stuck in the funnel and the mess that can accompany trying to knock it loose. The funnel also won’t pull brass from the loading block and has a Teflon-infused hard coat finish and interfaces with the SAC modular headspace comparator inserts.

The modular headspace comparator system and modular bullet comparator system are both interchangeable and now have a third use with the SAC funnel. If you already have a SAC bullet comparator or headspace comparator kit, you may choose to just order the funnel. 

What’s in the Box

Ordering the SAC Modular Funnel Kit rather than the pieces allows you to choose the inserts you need and also saves you $55 over purchasing the pieces individually. 

The kit includes the funnel, a 1.250” funnel extension that audibly clicks easily into the funnel base, four inserts of your choice and a tray.

Funnel Kit in Action

To test this funnel, I opted for two extremes, a primed .223 case and a primed .30-06 case. Keeping on the theme, I have the new StaBALL Match Ball Powder from Hodgdon for .223 (comparable to Varget) and IMR 4350, a long stick powder more prone to clogging for the .30-06. 

I pre-measured both powder charges in separate pans. I first added the insert for .223, which popped in easily.

The wide mouth of the funnel allowed me to quickly dump the charge from the pan, leaving no granules left behind. The real test was the IMR 4350. I swapped out the .30-06 insert and dumped the stick powder in.

It took a second, but all powder flowed into the cartridge without any outside influence. This would definitely not have been the case with other funnels and such a fast pour.

Experimenting with different pour speeds, I was able to have zero delay in the powder going into the case. No matter the speed, none of the powder remained stuck in or clogged the funnel. 

Conclusion

One thing I really like about Short Action Customs is they always give you a choice of what inserts you want, whether you are working with their modular headspace comparator, bullet comparator, or the funnel kit. 

Over multiple attempts with two very different powders and two very different cases, the SAC modular funnel kit worked flawlessly. I’m very happy with the system and look out for it in future stories!
