Loading Precision 6mm x 47 with Triebel Dies

I’ve been eagerly waiting for Triebel dies to load for my 6mm x 47 Lapua BAT Hammerhead build. They’ve finally arrived and I’ve developed a great recipe.

About the Build

My 6mm x 47 Lapua build started with a BAT Hammerhead action in a WOOX Furiosa Ultra chassis (ULTIMATERELOADER10 to save 10%).

I combined this with a 6mm 1:7.5 Krieger barrel blank from OTM Tactical (UR5 to save 5%) that I finished on the Precision Matthews PM-1440HVT-2 with Triebel reamers and gauges.

A  Timney Calvin Elite Custom Rem700 trigger, Leupold Mark 4HD 6-24×52, and Hawkins Precision M5 DBM rounded out the package.

Die Set-Up and Loading

Just to test the rifle, I attempted to engineer some ammunition, but the results weren’t a true indicator of the rifle’s capabilities. Now, I’ve finally had an opportunity to build a quality round. I loaded H4350 in fire-formed Lapua cases with Hornady 6mm 110 grain A-Tip Match bullets. ‘

I selected Triebel dies for their precision and craftsmanship. It took a while to get the 6mm x 47 dies as they are a new caliber offering. Check out our dedicated story for more details on these dies, available exclusively from Creedmoor Sports

Area 419’s loading block provided an easy place to stage the cartridge cases. I lubed the outside of the cases and used a Q-tip to apply imperial sizing wax to the inside of the case necks.

Setting up the sizing die on the Area 419 ZERO press was simple.

Insert the die, raise the ram, and screw the die in until it touches the shellholder and cams over.

I also pulled out a 3mm Hex key, 5mm wrench, 10mm wrench, and 19mm wrench.

This array of tools covers all maintenance and set-up needs for the Triebel dies. After initial setup, I used Forster’s datum dial to check shoulder bump, setting the calipers so a fired case will read 0.

I wanted to keep the shoulder bump between 0 and 0.015”, so I made tiny adjustments to the die until each sized case fit this range. If I really wanted to be exact, I could use the ZERO modular shell holder system from Area 419, but for starting out, I wasn’t concerned.

After sizing and depriming my cases, I used a rag to wipe away the excess case lube. I then primed each case using a Primal Rights competition primer seater

Finally, it was time to add powder. After referencing Hodgdon’s online reloading data center and my previous Berger 105 grain data, I decided to measure out 36.0 grains of H4350 on the RCBS Chargemaster Link while installing the Triebel benchrest seating die.

It’s important to select the best size seating stem for your chosen bullet. I used a bullet to test the various stems while waiting for the next powder charge, and used my wrenches to install the right one. I reassembled the die and placed it in the turret of the ZERO press.

Next, I placed a case in the shellholder, raised the ram, and screwed down the die until I felt resistance. I then backed the die off slightly and tightened the lock ring. For further refinement, I raised the ram with a dummy cartridge and appropriately adjusted the seating stem.

I seated a bullet over a charge of powder and used calipers to measure cartridge overall length. When I was happy with the result, I seated the rest of the bullets.

Shooting

Aside from making sure the loading rounds are safe, the most important measure of success is downrange performance.

With a Longshot target camera and Caldwell Velociradar set up, I shot the rifle off a rest at the mid-mountain range. My first five shots went into 0.236” at 100 yards.

To make sure this wasn’t a fluke, I fired another five shots. This group measured 0.275”. The average shot velocity was approximately 2,750 fps. with a 16.7 fps standard deviation.

Conclusion

This rifle shot incredibly well and the  6mm x 47 recoil was mild. The custom Triebel dies I requested were easy to use, great quality, and produced top-level ammunition.

I look forward to continuing load development to reduce the standard deviation velocity statistics.  (Don’t forget — Triebel dies are available exclusively from Creedmoor Sports.)
