Hello everyone- lots to talk about related to rifle builds and related projects! I wanted to provide a roll-up summary and update related to all of the builds/projects I’m working on, and some very cool training that I’ll be taking with Gordy Gritters in December 2019!
Gordy Gritters’ One Week Precision Rifle Building Class
If you are interested in building extremely accurate rifles, you should consider Gordy Gritters’ one-week Precision Rifle Building Class, I’ll be there and I’d love to learn along side you!
From Gordy’s Page:
One week “PRECISION RIFLE BUILDING” Class
*This one week class is a combination of all three gunsmithing classes below running back-to-back. We will do this in a highly detailed step-by-step process in the order a rifle is normally built – action first, barrel next, then all the rest of the accurizing techniques and procedures needed to complete the build. So by the end of the week you will have learned all the procedures normally used to build an extremely accurate custom rifle, plus a wealth of other information on accurizing factory rifles.
Note that due to the enormous amount of material we cover in such a short time-frame, that this is not a hands-on class for the most part. I will supply all the projects we work on during the class, and there is no time for students to work on their own projects like we can do in a private/one-on-one class.
Students will receive a large amount of step-by-step written materials and several hundred captioned step-by-step photos to help you remember all the details as you put this training to use after the class. Another benefit for students who have taken my class is I am available any time for free consultation via emails or phone calls to help you with your projects when questions arise.
*If you are not able to attend the entire week, you may want to just sign up for any one or two of the individual classes that week. Just let me know what works for you.
Upcoming scheduled dates:
December 9-14, 2019
Cost of one week class: $1495
Note: $200 nonrefundable deposit required in advance, balance due first day of class
If you are interested in attending, send Gordy an email: gordy@GordysPrecision.com
6.5 PRC Light-Weight Long-Range Backpacker Build
I’m very excited about my 6.5 PRC light-weight rifle build! I JUST received the last parts (barrel blank and stock) a couple days ago, and I’m going to be starting the build very soon.
This build will focus on the following:
- Demonstrating what’s needed to build a 6.5 PRC rifle from scratch
- Hunting with 6.5 PRC
- Building a light-weight hunting rifle with reasonable recoil
And here are some of the components that will be used for this build:
- Action: Pierce Engineering Titanium Remington 700 Footprint
- Barrel: Benchmark/Hell’s Canyon light weight carbon wrapped barrel, 1:8 twist
- Stock: Benchmark Carbon Fiber
- Trigger: TriggerTech Special
- Bottom Metal: Redsnake Tactical
- Magazines: Accurate Mag
300 PRC Budget-Oriented Remington 700 Long Range Build
I’ve already introduced the Remington 700 Long Range here on Ultimate Reloader- covering 300 Remington Ultra Magnum (300 RUM). It’s been fun, and I really like the rifle. The next chapters in this story will be finishing some 300 RUM load development and shooting, and then rebarreling the rifle for 300 PRC.
Some stories you may want to check out:
TESTED: Remington 700 Long Range 300 Remington Ultra Magnum
300 Remington Ultra Magnum Versus My Pool
This budget-oriented build will focus on the following:
- Showing how a budget 300 PRC can perform
- What’s needed to put together a 300 PRC rifle from an existing rifle
- General purpose 300 PRC shooting, hunting with 300 PRC
And here are some of the components that will be used for this build:
- Barrel: Benchmark match-grade, hand-lapped
- Trigger: Elftmann Tactical
- Bottom metal and Magazines: Accurate Mag
HOWA 1500 6 CREED UR Re-Barrel
A while back I ran a couple stories featuring the HOWA 1500 heavy barreled action in 6mm Creedmoor from Brownells:
HOWA 1500 Barreled Actions from Brownells: 6mm Creedmoor Build Kick-Off
KRG Bravo Upgrades and Mystic Precision MPOD Install: HOWA 1500 6mm Creedmoor
Re-Barrel at 300? Diagnosing a HOWA 1500 6mm Creedmoor That Won’t Shoot
I love the rifle, but it just won’t shoot as good as I’d like it to! So I’ve teamed up with International Barrels and JGS Precision to put together a great build! I worked out custom reamer geometry with JGS Precision (freebore, based on my load, including bullet and bullet seating depth). Stay tuned for more details!
7.92x39mm Dual Build
Finally, I’ll be looking at 7.62x39mm in depth! This will involve two rifle builds:
- Uintah Precision UP-15 (currently 6.5 Grendel) rebarreled to 7.62x39mm
- CMMG Resolute 300 6.5 Grendel separate 7.62x39mm upper build
I’ll be using Green Mountain Barrel blanks for both of these builds:
RX76239 27″ 7.62 x 39 Cal 1.20″ OD 4140CM 1:9.5 Turned BBL Blank
From the Green Mountain product page:
7.62 x 39 Cal, 1:9.5 Twist, 27” Long, 1.20” OD, 4140CM, Turned on Center Barrel Blank. Button Rifled, Air Gauged, and Stress Relieved.
I’ll be covering some “different” rifle build processes compared to what I’ve published already, and will be pushing 7.62x39mm to accuracy levels I haven’t personally achieved before. Can’t wait!
Don’t miss out on Ultimate Reloader updates, make sure you’re subscribed!
Thanks,
Gavin
