Come With Me To Pick Up My AK-47

I guess you could say it was predictable: Right after the 2016 shooting in Orlando Florida, politicians followed the typical knee-jerk “playbook” – we need to ban so-called assault rifles, right? Wrong. I’m a strong believer that restricting law-abiding citizens from buying guns as counter-productive and harmful. Just like “no gun signs” in buildings, businesses, parks, etc. These measures do benefit criminals, but have a negative effect on law-abiding citizens. With Chicago setting a record this year for total murders to date in that city (over 500 and counting), it’s clear to me that these gun laws haven’t helped, in fact they’ve been harmful.

I won’t go too far into the politics here, but given recent political happenings (reactions to shootings plus the election) I want to lean into the issue by bringing positive and educational stories about the guns that many here in the USA want to ban. With context set, I’ve decided to double-down on stories related to the AR-15 (check out the .25-45 Sharps series I’m mid-way through right now, plus many more stories coming in this series and related series).

So after much preparation and experimenting with some new storytelling techniques (see the video below), with this post I’m kicking off a long-term series that will celebrate the AK-47, and go into many aspects of the 7.62x39mm cartridge, including a bunch of content and detail related to reloading 7.62x39mm ammunition for the AK-47 and the SKS. It’s going to be both educational and FUN!

I’ll start with inviting you along as I go to pick up the AK-47 at Low Price Guns in Bellevue Washington, my local FFL.

With so many options out there for AK-47 style rifles, why the Century Arms N-PAP? I’ll discuss briefly here!

Century Arms N-PAP

Back in about 1992 I purchased a Norinco MAK-90: basically an AK-47 made in China with a thumb-hole stock instead of the more traditional pistol grip. Kind of silly, the idea of a pistol grip somehow making an AK-47 more “dangerous” to the public, but that’s the case with most gun legislation, it’s just useless and silly. I sold that rifle a while back, and decided that now was the time to get back into the AK-47 game, this time with a more “true to the original” version. After a quick evaluation of the available options, I decided the Century Arms “Zastava” Serbian-made N-PAP fit the bill. I wanted something with good build quality that was a “real” (yes, that’s subjective) AK-47- stamped receiver and all.

I’ll save the “full details” for the unboxing/overview video and post, but as a spoiler: I really like the N-PAP so far!

So What Should You Do?

It’s time to act- not to sit tight and wait. Here’s a few things you can do today:

  • Study and follow local legislation
  • Write your local representative
  • Vote in November (make sure everyone in your family votes)
  • Join and support the NRA: https://home.nra.org/ (who else is fighting for your 2nd ammendment rights?)
  • Don’t wait to buy items that are at risk
  • Be cool. Don’t panic and treat others like you’d like to be treated. If you want to be respected (including your 2nd amendment rights) – be respectful. Be mindful that with your actions you reflect on all gun owners in the USA. Think twice before putting aggressive or in-your-face bumper stickers on your car or truck. Refrain from actions that do more harm for our cause than good.

Special thanks to Jason Cazes who runs Low Price Guns – a great guy that runs a great gun shop.

In the Bellevue area there are other gun shops that over-price their items, don’t treat customers well, and somehow stay in business. It’s always refreshing to visit Low Price Guns- a shop with great staff, great prices, and a genuine interest and care for their customers. Find *your* local “up-standing” gun shop and support them- it’s even worth spending a few dollars more in my opinion.

Together, we’ll get through this. Don’t wait and watch your rights disappear. Have thoughts you’d like to share? Do you have an action plan? Please leave a comment!

Thanks,
Gavin

  1. Gavin, thanks for this video. Don’t care for the AK, but, and this is a BIG BUT, it doesn’t matter, you want it and it’s your money. One of the things that makes this country great, is you have the freedom to purchase what you want. Thanks for covering the NICS background check. The Peoples Democratic Republic of California, makes you wait 10 more days to get your gun after the NICS passes, and you have to have a new locking device for it too. Looking forward to the un-boxing video and the rest of the series.

  2. This 6-plus minute video shows nothing about why you like the Century Arms N-PAP 47. A waste of time. All of us have gone through the paper signing to get a firearm. this was supposed to say why you liked the above named AK47 … After test firing …and we are left hanging with the big word WHY?
