HANDS-ON: NEW SK High Velocity Match 22LR

If you’re looking for speed and precision for your rimfire rifle, SK’s new High Velocity Match ammunition is a new product worth looking at, and that’s exactly what we’ll do in this story!

About SK High Velocity Match Ammunition

From the SK Ammunition product page:

The new SK High Velocity Match exits the muzzle at a blistering 1,263 feet per second (385 m/s). Disciplines such as PRS Rimfire and NRL22 trust High Velocity Match to strike on-target with both speed and precision. SK’s 40 grain round-nosed projectile is combined with a proprietary blend of clean-burning, high-energy propellant for reliable functioning in all platforms – shot after shot.

SK Ammunition is proud to announce the latest addition to our family of .22 LR ammunition, SK High Velocity Match.

Targeted for .22 LR enthusiasts that prefer lightning-fast speed, new SK High Velocity Match exits the muzzle at a blistering 1,263 feet per second (385 m/s). Where every second counts, disciplines such as PRS Rimfire and NRL22 trust High Velocity Match to strike on-target with both speed and precision. SK’s 40 grain round-nosed projectile is combined with a proprietary blend of clean-burning, high-energy propellant for reliable functioning in all platforms – shot after shot.

Until now, hi-velocity .22 LR ammunition was always “code” for cheap, plinking, and price-point, with quality unchanged for generations. SK’s Hi-Velocity Match aims to break the status quo and offer shooters the first high performance .22 LR round. SK High Velocity – Precision has no Speed Zone.

SK High Velocity Match will be available in spring of 2021. Check with your local distributor for availability in your country.

Test Setup: Rifle and Scope

For the testing covered in this article, I’m using a Bergara B-14R CARBON rifle, Athlon Midas TAC 6-24x50mm FFP scope, Harris S-BRM 6-9″ Bipod, and Armageddon Gear Game Changer rear bag. This combination has proven to be very accurate and flexible!

SK High Velocity Match Test Results

I started my testing by shooting three 5-shot strings with the SK High Velocity Match ammunition at 50 yards. Here’s the roll-up data for those 5 shot strings:

The first 5-shot group here was the best I’ve shot with this Bergara B-14R rifle:

Wow- great accuracy, and the velocity was IMPRESSIVE for an 18″ barrel! SK advertises 1,263 FPS from a 26″ barrel, and I saw 1257 FPS from an 18″ barrel! If it weren’t for the flyer I got on the 2nd group, the average group size would be down below 0.250″!

Comparison Data

I thought it would be interesting to compare SK’s new High Velocity Match ammunition with a few other types: shot in the same conditions with the same rifle. Here’s the “other” ammunition SKUs I threw into the mix:

  1. SK Standard Plus
  2. Lapua Center-X
  3. Federal Game SHOK high-velocity

And here’s the results from that testing:

The data shown above confirms what SK claims: you’ll get about a 200 FPS gain over similar non-high-velocity match ammunition, and better accuracy compared with non-match high velocity ammunition.

I’m a believer! And some shots on D-M Targets steel at 100 yards confirmed my confidence in this ammunition/rifle combination! Here’s the moment of impact caught on camera:

  1. For High Velocity my favorite is Winchester Power Point.
For Standard Velocity I love CCI Standard, I would never be out of this one.
