Unboxing the RCBS Ultrasonic Cleaner

In preparation for loading 45 ACP on the RCBS Pro Chucker 5, I thought it would be a great idea to “get serious” about my die cleaning setup. Well, I’m about to show you a huge upgrade from my “shake the dies in a can of paint thinner method” that I’ve used for years. I’m pretty excited to “step into the modern era” on this one.

Enter the RCBS Ultrasonic Cleaner. This unit is packed with features, and will be great for cleaning dies, cleaning handguns and gun parts, and cleaning brass. In this post/video, I’ll do a live un-boxing (no, I didn’t peek inside prior to shooting the video :)).

Here’s the overview of what’s included:

Specifically:

  • Main unit
  • Parts basket
  • Power cord
  • Drain hose
  • Owner’s manual

I’m looking forward to cleaning some dies with this unit- that’s up next. I’ll pick up where we left off here with setup, and we’ll get those 45 ACP dies ready to rock on the RCBS Pro Chucker 5!

Thanks,
Gavin

  1. I’ve used the same ultrasonic cleaner. I picked it because of the size and the drain. It’s a great tool. One warning: Use the correct cleaning solution! Pistols I cleaned in the pistol-cleaning solution and brass I cleaned in the brass-cleaning solution come out perfect. But, I once cleaned a couple of pistols in the brass-cleaning solution and it ruined the bluing.

  2. Gavin, do not make the same mistake I did. I have an AR10 with a NIB bolt carrier group. Used Hornady gun cleaner and it started turning my bolt black. I did not see any warnings on the container about this. The case cleaner says not to use it on nickel cases but the weapons cleaner had no such warnings. I will be curious to know if the RCBS cleaner turns NIB black.

Still think the ultra sonic cleaners get the brass too clean, Cases feel like they are super dry and pull the oil out of your fingers. Still have a 2+ gallon ultra sonic unit that I use for weapons cleaning, just not NIB parts. For cases I use the stainless pins in a large drum tumbler (25 pounds of pins and two gallons of water) with just a capful of Hornady’s cleaner. Works crazy good. I will admit that I pre-clean my cases in warm soapy water to get the lube off after sizing and then rinse. I use cold water and cold water rinse. Once the pins have been used a while they get de-burred and I don’t get any pins stuck in the flash holes. I found that if I pre-wash my pins stay clean and don’t get coated with dirty lube. Either way you have to dry the cases. Large towel and a small blower and they are ready to load or be bagged up for later use. I have done as many as 400 .223 cases at once in the drum. Couldn’t get anywhere close to that in an ultra sonic unit and the cases never get hot (causes fast tarnish) I have thousands of cases in gallon bags that look new months after cleaning. Gary
