  1. Hi Gavin – I have it down to two choices the Hornady LNL or the Dillion XL650 if you had to choose one which would it be?

    David

  2. David- I’m working my way through a comprehensive set of videos, articles, and reviews (coming soon) for all 4 5-station progressive reloading machines (Hornady Lock-N-Load AP, Dillon XL-650, Lee Loadmaster, and RCBS Pro-2000). These resources will help you decide on a press based on the features, quality, etc.

Until then, you can watch videos covering all but the Pro 2000 here on http://www.ultimatereloader.com (RCBS Pro 2000 videos coming soon).

  3. Gavin,

I am in the same boat with David. I shoot 45 ACP and .223/5.56 in my AR. I like the Hornady LnL AP but really like the Lee Loadmaster as well except for the bad reviews I have read about it and some of its quirks. I already own a 4 die Lee Set for 45 ACP and really like the fact that the Lee has the case feed tubes so I do not have to place each case in the press by hand. The Hornady has the powered case feeder that is way slick but really begins to push it up in price. My feeling is that if I have to place each case by hand I should just get a Turret press.

I would be interested to see if there is an option to use a simple tubular case feeder for the Hornady. I am ready to make a purchase and begin reloading my own stuff here at the house. I am anxious to see your comparisons and honest insight on the different equipment.

  4. John- That’s an interesting idea- if you buy the Dillon XL-650 (without case feeder) you basically have a single tube that you can fill, and the cases get inserted. (That’s why the case feeder is only ~$200).

You could put something like that together, but you’d need the lower parts for the hornady case feeder. I find it’s not too bad to load without a case feeder if you’re not in too much of a hurry, but they can sure be nice for extended loading sessions.

Glad you’ll be sticking around for the comparison articles. Should be fun!

  5. Gavin,

After surfing the web, for hours it seems, and talking with several different folks at the gun shows and reading the things on the Loadmaster Zone and other websites I am still boggled but leaning very heavily toward the Lee LnL AP or the Dillon XL 650. It is a lot of cash to lay out up front but, my goal is to be able to shoot more than to be developing loads. My point of view is to find what works with the least problems and stick with it. .45 ACP with 230gr FMJ and .223/5.56 62gr ball for my 1:7 twist AR.

It is nice to see a younger persons viewpoint who is a bit more “progressive” than to listen to those say that you have to start with a single stage and work your way up. I see no reason to buy this stuff 2 and three times. I may end up doing some .38 or 9 mil as my son grows in caliber.

I really like the price of the Loadmaster but, the complaints I have read make me wonder about the true value. Of course reading the Lee Reloading manual you think you were a fool if you did not use Lee equipment exclusively. The Dillon XL650 seems to be readily available at my local shop and seems to very well supported but, for the money I could have the Hornady LnL AP with case feeder for the same cash as just the Dillon Press.

I don’t care what anyone says this is a lot of cash and should be looked at or scrutinized carefully. I think the largest positive with the Lee is its price and availability. Lee speaks very harshly about tubular primers vs. their slide system and some of it makes sense and some of it seems like marketing.

    1. John- you may want to read the comments I just posted on the following blog entry:
      http://ultimatereloader.com/?p=784

…similar questions about Loadmaster -vs- Dillon XL-650. You should definately think it through! You are buying a “system” and there can be benefits/drawbacks down the line that you may not have thought about.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

The Dillon is great, the case feeder is wonderful, and I’d say it’s the smoothest in operation- especially with Dillon dies. You don’t have a lot of stoppages when using it, that’s for sure. It does a great job with rifle calibers (haven’t tested that yet on the Loadmaster).

  6. Gavin,

I want to start reloading my own ammunition so I can shoot more and better my shooting skills.I am leaning towards the LEE Classic Turret Kit to start off in the reloading world.I have researched the internet for hours on end looking for the best prices on Bullets,Primers,Powder,Brass ECT.Could you please turn me in the right direction as I know you know the best place to buy these things.

I have really enjoyed your videos on youtube, .If you could help me out on supplies I would very much appreciate it,and also could you please give your input on the Lee Classic Turret for beginners and again thank you very much.

    1. JRW: I’m glad that you’ve found the videos to be helpful!

Fist, have you looked at the Kempf Gun Shop Classic Turret kit?

It’s exclusive as far as I know.

For other supplies, look at MidwayUSA, Cabelas, Midsouth Shooter’s Supply, etc.

And BTW: I have a classic turret on the way, and will have videos up hopefully in the next few months.

      Thanks!
