Every once in a while I meet someone that blows my mind: someone that holds the secrets to advancing something I’m working towards. At the 2019 SHOT Show, my meeting with Emil Praslick fell into this category. I’ve really just started my journey reading wind for long-range shooting, and during my 20 minute conversation with Emil, I felt like I had an action plan for my next related learning activities.

Here’s what I talked about and learned from Emil:

My Action Plan

I plan to put some of the practices that Emil talked about during my interview with him into practice, and already have started on that. During the last PRS match I competed in, I used the direction of the mirage to help determine wind direction. I also created 1 mph wind factors that I could multiply based on observed/measured wind speed. I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of “wind wisdom”, but it feels good to be making progress.

In the future, I plan to do the following:

• Document what I learned from Emil, and break it down into “learning activities”
• Regularly estimate wind speed, and verify with my  Kestrel
• Document my progress with notes and observations (including hits and misses, and what happened with wind)
• Take every opportunity to shoot with people that know wind well (at any PRS match there are lots of talented wind readers/callers)
