2015 is Here: What Do You Want To See on Ultimate Reloader?

Hard to believe another year is already upon us! I’m really excited to share with you all some content plants for Ultimate Reloader, and also hear about what you want to see on this website and on my YouTube channel.

2015-UR-products-1200

Reloading Equipment and Products

I’ve got some great equipment overviews lined up for 2015 including case cleaning and case prep equipment, more bullet feeder videos and highlights, and much more. Some of the products I’ll highlight will include:

  • RCBS Case Prep Center and attachments
  • More Hornady Lock-N-Load Bullet Feeder content
  • RCBS Utrasonic Cleaner and consumables

Gunpowder Highlights

This year I’ll feature more new and “classic” gunpowder content including but not limited to:

  • Hodgdon CFE 223
  • Hodgdon CFE Pistol

Handloading Overviews

Have you been wondering what it’s like to load 50 BMG, 500 S&W Magnum, or more mainstream cartridges? I’m planning some great cartridge-specific handloading content that will build on some of the stories I published in 2014. Have a specific cartridge you’d like to know about? Please leave a comment!

Your Ideas

I want to thank everyone that’s been using the “Ultimate Reloader Suggestion Box” (see left-hand column on main page) – I’ve gotten some great ideas from you all! I also want to invite all of you to suggest ideas by leaving comments on this post. I’ll add them to my list!

I also wanted to thank the community for your continued interest and support of Ultimate Reloader, the #1 ranked reloading blog on google, and the most popular handloading-specific YouTube channel (now over 5,000,000 views, and 17,000 subscribers). Let’s together make 2015 the best year ever!

Thanks,
Gavin

  1. Hi Gavin, I don’t remember if I asked for this before but how about a segment dealing with reloading brand new brass? I’m asking because in over 40 years of reloading I’ve never used new, unfired brass. I have a SAKO TRG-42 in .338 Lapua and I’ve purchased a couple of hundred new Lapua cases. I’m unclear about how to proceed with brand new, unfired brass.

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  2. I would like to see the “ultimate” beginner, start to finish download or DVD for reloading 5.56. Equipment and ALL necessary tools, supplies. I have purchased what I believe to be complete Equipment and accessories. A list with several options; good reviews; bad reviews. Complete instructions via video (assume I only know which end of a gun the trigger is on). Won’t hurt my feelings.

I use the example as it is so popular and still growing. And it is more involved than reloading a straight neck pistol load.

    Thank you,
    RD

    1. Romney- thanks for the suggestion. I actually have that on my short list of projects! I shot the “Web-Series” AR-15 DVD as first steps towards a collection of “Studio-Series” DVDs. Pistol Loading, Rifle Loading, and reloading for the AR-15/AR-10 are the first editions that I’m planning to shoot, don’t have an ETA yet, but am actively planning.

  3. Hi Gavin,
I know it would not be as exciting as actually reloading but how about an episode on reloading safety.
We all think we know it but I bet there are some things each one of us could learn.

  4. Tried every method of case cleaning there is I think. Used tumblers with walnut and corn cob, treated and untreated, same in vibratory bowls, a couple of ultrasonic units and wet tumbling with stainless pins. For me the pins have worked the best and quickest. I am using a homemade pin tumbler and it works good but the separation is a chore. I’d like to see your ideas on this. Unlike ultrasonic cleaners, my cases are shiny and stay that way. The ‘too clean’ ultrasonic cases seem to tarnish very quickly.

Also, I have several progressive presses including a LNL Hornady. How do you deal with primer residue? All of my units seem to start having issues with primer residue quickly. I have wound up just using clean, de-primed cases but that is an extra step. Thanks and keep up the great site. Gary

  5. Use different makes of dies…..Reddiing…Lee Precision….etc…on the precision side and see if there really is any diffrence loading a cartridgle…same rifle/brass/loading/primer/etc…and compare the difference if any in accuracy. More so on the neck sizing side of reloading and perhaps full length resizing just for kicks.

  6. I thought you were going to do a piece on using the bullet feeder (Hornady, I think) with the Dillon 550B press?
Didn’t see it, but would like to. I know you like Hornady products best, but there are a LOT of Dillon users out there.

    1. Ahoy Bruce,
Donno about Hornady as I’m a hard core Dillon fan. Neuropathy of my hands made it difficult to load cases and bullets in my SDB. I popped for a 550B w/ a Dillon case feeder and got a Mini Mr Bullet Feeder setup from MidwayUSA. I’m about 5K into it and can say once it’s dialed in it runs beautifully. Both options are kinda pricey but they do for me what I wanted them to. Good Luck

  7. I would like see more in depth (but plain English) explanations of ballistics intertwined with the reloading process information.

  8. Hi Gavin,
Just want to let you know that you have given me the inspiration to reload in the first place! Wonderful website with great material I have referenced time and again. Here is a challenge for you….Please do a segment on reloading the 5.7X28 Herstal or better yet the “5/7N”. This truly would be the Ultimate Reloading experience!!!!! What do you think??? Let’s give it a try. I want to buy the gun but I don’t want to spent exorbitant money on the ammo!! Let me know!!

    1. I, too, would like info on all means, of utilizing XL 650, with Mr. BulletFeeder or if necessary, single stage machine to reload the 5.7X28mm….. Have “TONS” of brass & need to get into a streamlined means of producing lots of “LITTLE STINGERS”…

  9. Hi Shooters,

There must be a list or way of knowing what gunpowders, semi-smokeless products are the same even if from different companies. Which powders perform the same as or like others, the same burn rate, density, is it economical (pricing), low or high pressure, clean burning or not, uniform ignition, developed for what caliber and major or minor load velocity. I think we reloaders need a list of smokeless gunpowders that we can us if and when we need to substitute another powder and get the same or like performance.

  10. I would like to see the the 5.56 brass cut down to be used in a 300 Blackout. I know we can buy barrels to fix on the gun. But I don’t like the 5.56 round and would like to use the 300 Blackout instead.

  11. Gavin: I know you have done videos on all the major presses, but how about a head-to-head comparison of the Dillon XL650, the Hornady LNL AP, and the RCBS 2000 doing a caliber change over.

I started with a Redding T-7 turret and I love it for real precision work. I bought a Dillon XL650 but I was disappointed with the powder drop system. So, (ala “Frankenloader”) I added a Hornady case activated powder drop to the Dillon and have been impressed with the elegant simplicity of the Hornady design. I’m thinking about adding a second progressive and can’t decide between blue, red or green. I think seeing you do a caliber change over ( a complicated process on the D-650) would help me decide.

Second topic: I load pistol ammunition and, God help me, I clean every primer pocket. I know it’s obsessive, and probably a waste of time, but I just can’t escape the feeling that somehow that primer residue inhibits a clean ignition of a reloaded round. So, do these liquid tumblers with steel pins really clean the primer pockets? Even small pistol cases like 9mm?

Gavin, great site and you keep improving it. Thanks for all your work.
    Greg

  12. Gavin — I love your site. I’d like to see a series that addresses questions that beginner or inexperienced reloaders might have that would help move them to the next level. Things like how to set up dies, changing calibers, reasons for choosing one powder over another, etc.

  13. Hi, Gavin,
I so look forward to any and all reloading equipment videos you do, They are the best! I would love to see any reloading presses that you have not done like the RCBS Summit press or the Lyman T-Mag or the Forster press.
Maybe neck sizing as opposed to full resizing. I watch your older videos over and over just because I miss seeing them.
    Keep them coming!

  15. More on polygonal rifling, are they more accurate than traditional rifling lands?
More on Berry’s Bullets, with CFE powder loads.
And why does Dillon not have a 380 case adopter for their case feeder on the Dillon rl 550 b.? Why will they not make one ? This would be a great after market accersary!
    BT.

  16. Gavin,

Would you please consider reviewing the Redding competition seating die? I think it would be a great segment, especially in conjunction with your goals of volume precision rifle loads.

Thank you for all of your efforts.

    Sincerely,
    Ben

  17. Gavin, how about a Frankenlöder series. everybody elses parts one one main frame. Example Dillon XL650, with Lee, RCBS, Hornady and Redding parts. Of course I’d really like to see a Dillon or Lee Case feeder working on a Hornady LNL progressive press. You could even mix and match the frames, since you have so many presses to begin with. This could focus on adapting parts that weren’t designed to work together like case/bullet feeders or powder measures.

This would be a revisit to the 9mm Frankenlöder you did in 2011.

Thanks for ALL of your great idead and videos.

  18. Hi Gavin,

I’d really like to see some discussion/suggestions on reloading data sources. Recently, I have seen some wide differnces in load data. One example, 115gr Nossler JHP using Accurate No7

    Western Powder Load data:
    Firearm 4″ barrel Twist 1-10″
    Max Load = 7.5gr & yields 1,127 FPS COL = 1.077 (33,684 pressure)

    Nossler’s website data
    Firearm 4″ barrel Twist 1-16″
    Max Load = 8.5gr & yields 998 FPS COL = 1.100

Significantly shorter COL (0.023″) which could explain some higher pressure and velocity but I’m not sure that makes sense while using = 12.5% less powder.

I would really like to see the results confirmed or refuted.

Your site is awesome and huge so I have just haven’t found it yet please disregard.
Thanks for all you’re doing for the reloading community

    Best regards,
    Doug

  20. Gavin,

I currently have a MEC 9000 G progressive reloader for 12 gauge. I bought it used and have loaded a couple a thousand shells and have not been happy with it at all. I also wasn’t happy with MEC when I called for assistance and spoke to their engineers on 2 occasions on problems I’ve had with the machine.

I want to either buy a RCBS Grand or Dillon SL 900 and have looked at various sites on both. What would you or anyone else recommend?

  21. Hi Gavin,

Since being somewhat new to the hobby … rifle reloading (I have a few years experience in reloading shot shells), I took the simplistic approach and decided to load for precision and accuracy, while allowing myself to reload for pistol in the future.

With this in mind, I purchased a Hornady Lock-N-Load Classic Kit with some Hornady accessories (Kinetic Bullet Puller, Fast Load Powder Measure Stand, Rifle Micrometer Metering Insert for my powder measure … just to name a few); a Lyman Auto-Flow Pro 2500 Tumbler; Lyman Lube Pad Kit; Lyman Case Prep Tool Kit and other Lyman case prep tools. I have on order an RCBS 10-10 Mechanical scale, RCBS Deluxe Scale Check Weights set, and a RCBS vinyl scale cover.

Besides getting my dies, I now have to make my reloading bench. You have mentioned several times in many of your blogs and posts about featuring the same about your “new reloading bench,” utilising the heavy-duty aluminum track system and using 3/4 inch and 1-1/2 inch plywood base plates for mounting your case trimmers and presses respectively. To date I have not seen such a post or blog about your “new reloading bench.”

Do you have an estimated date of such a blog or post on this subject forth coming? I would like to know all the ins and outs, pro and cons; and any design changes and/or after thoughts you have had after your “new reloading bench” was completed. How is the heavy-duty aluminum track system holding out, especially while using your presses? What is the spacing between both aluminum tracks? How much overhang do you allow for your presses’ base plates over the front of the reloading bench? These types of questions could go on and on.

Very much interested in your thoughts and designs about your “new reloading bench” and how it holding out so far, especially the heavy duty aluminum track system.

Please keep up the good work in you blogs and posts. Very informative, especially for us beginners. I’ll keep on watching!

    Yours in reloading,

    Keyan

    1. I very much too want to see an in-depth of the bench. I have been waiting on this for a long time and i am in the process working on a design for my bench and want to knwo what all went in to you t-track systemand such.

  22. Gavin, I am new to your website and it is the best I have seen. I have been reloading for over 45 years. You have proven that you can teach an old dog new tricks. To your question of, what do you want to see on the ultimate reloader? That would have to be my right and left hands. Keep it up. The good work that is.
