Precision Matthews PM-1340GT: Part 2

Chambering precision rifle barrels is one of my favorite activities, but it takes time to get a new machine set up how I want it. In this video, I go over the additions I’ve made to my PM-1340GT

Precision Matthews Machines

The PM-1340GT isn’t the only gunsmithing lathe at Ultimate Reloader.

I also use the PM-1440GT, PM-1440HVT-2, and TL-1660.

Each machine has different capabilities which make it more or less suited to different tasks.

Modifications

Storage is critical for all lathes. I equipped the PM-1340GT very similarly to how I did the PM-1440GT. On both lathes I have one storage tray on the headstock and another on the splash guard.

I use the headstock tray for my precision measuring tools, indicators, chuck keys, thread pitch gauges, and other tools I need frequent access to. I’ve even customized my tray to allow it to hold screwdriver-type Allen keys.

The splashguard tray runs the full length to about ¾” beyond the splash guard. I relocated the DRO here as well as tooling and other accessories.

Moving the DRO prevents it from getting splashed with oil in its original location. I also built a custom morse taper #3 tooling rack that I placed above the tailstock. This makes for a convenient workflow.

It’s important to note that the PM-1340GT also comes with built-in storage on both sides of the lathe. I keep the toolbox and chucks there.

Moving on from storage, I made a number of modifications to the headstock. I built a spider featuring a pinch clamp and set screws that clamp the adjustment screws in place.

This eliminates the need for nuts that get in the way while extracting or retracting the spider screw. I also had to bore out the hole that goes around the outboard side of the spindle. I didn’t stop at the headstock, making personal adjustments to the side cover.

When I get a rifle barrel in the lathe, I do not want to remove it to do a belt change if need be.

To provide easy access, I used a chop saw to carefully move a section of the cover.

A steel pad on the side of the headstock tray serves as a connection point for indicators to verify barrel quality. I made one change to the carriage, adding a standoff/bump stop.

Calipers on the tailstock DRO provide an incremental reading on how deep we are drilling/reaming.

First Chambering Job

Rigid tooling and rigid work are the best combination for good chambering results.

One way I ensure this is by making and using rigid reamer holders.  My first chambering job on this lathe was a 6GT out of a steel 416R stainless barrel blank.

I used a carbide legacy reamer from Alpha Munitions. When I test fit the action I also checked for headspace. It as perfect.

Conclusion

More isn’t always better but it’s important to make a machine your own and make it work for you.
