Foundation Hybrid Stocks Explained: The Origin Story

What John-Kyle Truitt thought would be a 6-month process turned into a 3-year journey. In this two-part series, we discuss the birth and evolution of the Hybrid line of stocks from Foundation. They set out to make a lightweight hunting stock with the same feel as their traditional offerings. Foundation is known for their Micarta, but it’s heavy! While ideal for competition, could they take this material and innovate to produce a new line of hunting stocks? This had never been done before. What did it take and how did it come about?

Visiting Foundation Stocks

I had the opportunity to visit Foundation Stocks in Oklahoma and see firsthand what goes into each of their stocks. Several years ago, we did a deep dive into Foundation’s Micarta offerings and their success in the PRS

Foundation continues to be well-represented among top shooters in the Precision Rifle Series, as indicated by data published by the Precision Rifle Blog

To incorporate the Foundation feel and methodology into a two-pound hunting stock was an entirely different matter.

About Foundation Hybrid Stocks

All of Foundation’s Hybrid stocks have a Micarta bedding block at the heart of the stock.

This block is inlet the same way as their traditional, full-Micarta stocks for a true drop-in user experience. (There is no need for bedding.)

The Hybrid line currently includes the Gideon and the Ezekiel, with the Remnant coming soon! All have a soft-touch finish.

From Foundation Stocks

Our Hybrid line features a unique pairing of Micarta, Carbon Fiber and Aramid Fiber (commonly known as Kevlar). Carbon fiber provides the stock extreme stiffness while the aramid fiber supplies excellent torsion and dampening performance and assures high impact strength. Using this in conjunction with our Micarta bedding block has given us an extremely stiff, impact resistant stock with unique dampening characteristics.

Gideon

Gideon was Foundation’s first hybrid hunting stock. It has a fixed comb and squared forend, ideal both for position shooting and for mounting a full-length ARCA rail.

Check out our full video on the Gideon when it first came out!

Ezekiel

We’ve done two builds with Ezekiel at Ultimate Reloader—a 7 Sherman Short and a 7mm PRC on a BAT medium action

From Foundation Stocks

Foundation Stocks is excited to extend the Hybrid line of lightweight stocks with the Ezekiel Hybrid Hunting Stock. In chapter 37 of the book Ezekiel, we see the Lord commanding Ezekiel to take multiple sticks and join them together, so that they become one in your hand. We felt this analogy was well fitting for a stock in our Hybrid line, which takes materials that normally stand alone and combine them into “one stick” with amazing properties.

Ezekiel Hybrid Hunting Stock Highlights:

  • Adjustable cheekpiece
    • All-new light weight hardware design – 2.2 oz total hardware weight.
    • Patented clamps allow for adjustment with the use of a bullet.
  • Standard flush mount light weight arca rail
    • 10.375” length
    • 2.7 oz rail weight
  • Ambi molded in thumb shelves
  • Optional Foundation Stocks Night Vision Carriage System (NVCS)
    • Most versatile night vision / thermal compatible system on the market allowing for 10.250” of possible top rail location. From the shortest LPVO to the long day scope, the NVCS provides the flexibility for optimum mounting location of night vision or thermal devices.Picatinny side rails mount to the carriage of the assembly, lowering the rail location from traditional solutions and creating more space for reduced interference.
    • Precise top rail repeatability by way of six locating pins coupled with six 8-32 bolts for secure lockdown.
    • Multiple top rail heights are available.
  • Foundation Soft Touch Finish
    • Provides grip regardless of conditions
  • Total weight:
    • w/out NVCS option – 2lbs 7oz
    •  w/ NVCS option – 2lbs 15oz

While the full details of the Remnant have yet to be released, it is a fixed-comb stock with a four-degree negative comb weighing under two pounds with attachments!

Conclusion

Foundation Stocks continues to innovate and build stocks unlike any other. I love their story and technology. It was amazing to see it in person.
