From Leupold

When speed is paramount, there’s no substitute for a range-finding binocular. The BX-4 Range HD TBR®/W 10x42mm fuses our DNA® engine and ballistics software with the optical performance diehard hunters and shooters demand. Now you can spot and range targets without wasting valuable seconds switching between gear. Its high-contrast red OLED display delivers visible readouts in any light, and its edge-to-edge clarity makes glassing sessions easy on the eyes. The next time you’re packing for a match or hunt, cut the excess. Take the BX-4 Range HD TBR/W.

This time-saving combo of tech and glass is built around our Elite Optical System. It delivers excellent dawn-to-dusk light transmission for a bright image when it matters most, elite-level glare reduction in harsh light, and the resolution and clarity you can count on in the backcountry. Compare it to other range-finding binoculars in its class, and you’ll see a difference, especially in low light.

But that’s just half of what this optic is all about. Its 10x magnification provides a large field of view for glassing in tight areas while still being powerful enough to make positive IDs from a distance. And when you finally spot your target, one press of the power button will tell you exactly how far to send your rounds. Backed by our Lifetime Optics Guarantee and our Two-Year Electronics Guarantee, the BX-4 Range HD is built for years of performance.

What’s in the Box

The BX-4 Range HD binoculars come with a soft case and harness for easy carrying, eyecup covers, lens cloth, quick reference sheet for heads-up display, and instructions.

They have a soft, rubberized exterior for improved grip.

Ranging

Our optics test rig allows us to gather quantitative data on rifle scope performance using precision targets and exacting camera positioning.

To test the BX-4 binoculars, I decided to use my prototype binocular test rig. This tool, like the optics test rig for scopes, relies on precise camera alignment. I was able to record the heads-up display but it’s important to remember that camera footage does not provide any meaningful data on optics image quality.

I ranged a number of different terrain features and targets, including Harold the rock chuck.

The binoculars returned each distance incredibly quickly. I noticed no degradation in speed from the closer targets to the further ones.

Wanting to test the maximum range of the binoculars, I decided to range a hill I knew to be approximately 2,000 yards away. I ranged several different locations on that slope, the furthest of which came back at 2,262 yards. This was especially impressive as these numbers came back from grass, not steel or any hard objects.

I surveyed the terrain, ranging different spots until one came back in excess of the maximum range: 2,607 yards.

Functions

These binoculars have a number of features. The right-hand button atop the unit is the power button, which doubles as the range finder. Holding the left-hand button down for two seconds begins the cycle through the modes: TBR, BOW, and LOS.

ow is for archery while LOS stands for line of sight. It does not account for shot angle or ballistics and simply returns the straight-line distance to the target. As specified by Leupold’s manual, TBR, True Ballistic Range, calculates “the equivalent horizontal range [level fire range] from which you can determine the correct aim for the conditions.” This mode  has five functions: BAS, MIL, HOLD, MOA, and TRIG, one of which must be selected before choosing a ballistic group.

Included in the manual are charts of various cartridge loads separated into 25 cartridge groups. These 25 groups are built into the binoculars —all you have to do is select the appropriate group number in function three. This returns the proper distance for holdover purposes and a range that  accounts for shot angle. Pressing the button after selecting the ballistics group allows you to activate or deactivate the wind hold feature. Display intensity is adjusted in function five (low, medium, high) while unit output (yards, meters) is specified in six.

Conclusion

The integrated laser range-finder on the BX-4 Range HD binoculars yielded impressive results, especially on terrain.

This would be extremely beneficial to hunters. Aside from the swift readings, the BX-4 Range HD’s host of integrated features provides even more value to the shooter (or archer).
