Rimfire FUN: D-M Targets Rimfire Spinner Pro

If you have a rimfire rifle, there are a LOT of fun things  you can do with it: everything from plinking, to training, to hunting. In this article I’ll give you a “guided tour” of my latest rimfire target acquisition: The D-M Targets Rimfire Spinner PRO. It’s both fun and GREAT for training!

About the D-M Targets Rimfire Spinner PRO

From the D-M Targets Rimfire Spinner PRO Product Page:

Our latest rimfire spinner closely duplicates the action of a center fire spinner with standard .22 ammunition. This modular unit utilizes a center mount ball-bearing, changeable targets, adjustable leg system and AR500 construction. Can be spun well beyond 100yards. Target comes partially assembled with all necessary parts for easy assembly. We design our products with durability, reactivity and acoustics in mind. With our free hanging systems products can move and ring while still remaining engaged on the hanger. They can also be bolted to various other hanging systems, but it will dampen the movement and sound. We also take convenience and ease of use into consideration when designing our hanging systems. Most of our hanger systems are tool-less and set up in minutes. Time is precious, so we don’t want to waste your fiddling with bolts and wrenches. Cut from AR500 Steel. AR500 steel provides the best mix of hardness to not crater and cause erratic ricochet patterns, while not being so hard as to become brittle. This product is cut with a water table cooled plasma torch. Targets are cool to the touch right after being cut. After being cut smaller targets are tumbled, while larger targets are wire wheeled to remove dross. They are then quality checked for fit with our hanger systems and ready to be used. You can apply spray paint if desired. Powder coating, while available, is not recommended. While it is durable, it will certainly not stand up to being shot. We offer our products “in the raw” because it saves you money. And who doesn’t like saving money?

What’s In the Box

The D-M Targets Rimfire Spinner PRO comes with everything shown above, from top to bottom:

  • Mounting bolts, ball bearing assembly, main shaft, paddles (1 @ 3″, 1 @ 4″)
  • Leg brackets, leg tubes, instruction sheet
  • Quick disconnect pins, leg extensions
  • Swing arms

Assembly

Assembly starts with the spinner itself:

To assemble the spinner, the following is performed:

  1. Bearing is slid over main shaft, centered, and set screws tightened
  2. Swing arms are bolted together over bearing (loosely)
  3. Paddles are slid/snapped into swing arms
  4. Bolts with spacers are installed next to paddles and tightened
  5. Main bolts next to bearing are tightened

Then the legs are assembled:

The legs are put together as follows:

  • Leg tubes are slid over leg brackets and pinned into position
  • Leg extensions are slid into tubes and pinned into position

These steps are performed without tools using the quick attach pins. Following these steps, each leg assembly is slid onto the main shaft and angled to stay put with friction. The target can then be leveled, raised, or lowered by means of the leg extensions!

Shooting the Rimfire Spinner Pro

Now is when things get fun! Shooting the spinner is a matter of first getting the spinner to complete a full rotation, then to get the spinner spinning as fast as you can. You can also alternate shooting between the spinner and another target. You can alternate the side of the spinner you’re shooting at to speed up time to first rotation (or even slow down and stop the target). Lots of cool things you can do with this target and a good 22LR rifle.

I’m curious to try this target with a semi automatic rifle- the bolt action is a great way to shoot, but it’s impossible to go faster than the cycling rate of the bolt. A great challenge!

The rifle I’m shooing in the video is the Bergara B-14R CARBON, a GREAT super-accurate rimfire trainer rifle!

The Lapua Midas+ ammunition I used for this story works very well. You’ll want to check out my B-14R CARBON story to see the rifle and ammunition tested in-depth.
