AR-MPR: Planning your AR-15 build

Planning an AR-15 build can be more than a bit overwhelming! In this video I’ll walk you through some of the high-level decisions that you’ll need to make in order to get your AR-15 plans underway.

Did I miss anything important here? Please leave a comment if you have something to add.

Next, we’ll take a look at the parts and components for the AR-MPR upper, lower, and we’ll inventory the tools that we’ll need as well.

  1. Hey Gavin I completed a AR-15 build in 6.5 Grendel. What a sweet rifle, Alexander Arms barrel , Adam Arms piston system, Aero tech lower and topped off with an Eotech 512 sight. Two stage trigger with all good internal parts. I reload and I love what the Grendel has the ability to do. == Later Robert ==

  2. Hi Gavin,

Great video. It would be even better for rookies like me if you could add screenshots for each of the components as you describe them: A2 upper, A3 upper, different types of handguards and how they attach, etc. It’s harder to understand the differences between these components if I have no frame of reference in which to visualize them.

Keep it up! I’m excited to see where this project goes!

    1. That’s good feedback. I actually wanted to do that, but didn’t have any A1/A2 style shots I could use (copyright, etc).

This weekend, I helped by neighbor put his A2 style AR-15 together. Here’s a pic:

      Here’s a quick overview:
A1/A2 – Fixed carrying handle upper receiver (A2 has rear sight windage adjustment) – like a traditional M16

A3/A4 – Flat top with picatinny rail A4 has fixed front sight (I believe) – this is like the M4

Guys- did I get this right? 🙂

  3. Gavin,

What you are doing for the shooting and reloading community is fantastic. I’ve watched many of your videos and you have certainly come a long way in a short time. This is one of the most comprehensive sources of reloading information I’ve come across. It’s fantastic timing for me as well, as I just built an AR-15 for myself a few months ago and am now getting into reloading with the Dillon 550B press. Best of luck with the new AR-MPR project. If you find some additional time, I think will also be valuable to cover some topics that I haven’t seen much of yet–brass preparation and some more detail on overall length, headspacing, etc. I think it would also be really fun to bench test common components for accuracy with your new AR. For example, it would be great to see a competition between the common powders such as IMR 4198, H-335 and Varget with LC, Winchester and Remington brass and Sierra MatchKing, Hornady and Nosler bullets. Cheers!

    1. Thanks! Appreciate the feedback.

In phase II, we’ll cover all of the topics that you’ve outlined above- and that’s one of the parts of this project that I think will stir up some great conversations. The powder tests are very time consuming- so we’ll have to see. I may start with a popular powder, and move to another if I can’t get the accuracy I need from that powder (Varget?).

      Looking forward to it!
